AI Week 2024 Kicks Off

Doha, Qatar – AI Week 2024 commenced on Sunday at the Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s technological advancement. The event, held under the patronage of prominent dignitaries including Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the University of Doha for Science and Technology, brought together officials from the Qatar Foundation, ambassadors, industry leaders, and innovators from across the globe.
This year’s AI Week also celebrates the 15th anniversary of QSTP’s establishment, showcasing its commitment to promoting cutting-edge innovation. A robust program of lectures, panel discussions, workshops, live demonstrations, and networking opportunities has drawn professionals, researchers, startups, and AI enthusiasts to explore the future of artificial intelligence.
Dr. Jack Lau, President of QSTP, emphasized the park's pivotal role in advancing Qatar’s technological ecosystem. Underpinning the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the third National Development Strategy, QSTP has established itself as a hub for innovation, attracting over 40 startups specializing in AI. A new strategy unveiled during the event underscores a collaborative, government-driven approach to integrating startups and emerging talent into Qatar’s innovation landscape.
As a central player in the Qatar Foundation system, QSTP supports AI-driven advancements that are reshaping industries and enabling impactful solutions globally. The event highlighted the park’s efforts to leverage partnerships, attract global expertise, and foster an environment where technology can thrive.
Reem Mohammed Al Mansoori, Assistant Undersecretary for Digital Industry Affairs at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), highlighted the transformative power of AI in shaping Qatar’s future. Drawing parallels between Qatar's heritage of pearl diving and the pursuit of innovation, she illustrated how AI represents a modern treasure, unlocking unprecedented potential for progress. By 2030, AI is projected to contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy, a testament to its capacity to amplify human potential.
Qatar’s national AI strategy has already begun to integrate AI into essential services, enhancing urban management, traffic operations, energy efficiency, and public safety. With QR9 billion allocated for technology and innovation programs, Qatar is positioning its cities as smart, sustainable, and livable hubs for all residents.
The event also featured insights from Dan Jeavons, Vice President of Computer Science and Digital Innovation Technology at Shell, who highlighted Qatar’s strategic investments in AI. He emphasized the country’s potential to lead the Middle East in technological advancements and leverage AI to serve societal needs.
Essa Al Jamali, Relationship Manager at QSTP, emphasized the park’s ongoing commitment to empowering ambitious youth and supporting AI startups. Over the years, QSTP has provided funding programs, promoted collaborations with universities and think tanks, and partnered with institutions in the tech sector. The event showcased the work of over 200 local and international firms operating at the forefront of robotics, programming, and AI applications.
QSTP continues to serve as an incubator for AI innovation, hosting firms that specialize in diverse fields such as robotics, translation, and programming. With its dedication to nurturing partnerships and pushing the boundaries of technological advancement, the park is a testament to Qatar’s vision of becoming a global leader in AI and technology.
AI Week 2024 is not only a celebration of technological progress but also a platform to inspire the next wave of innovators, ensuring Qatar remains at the forefront of global innovation.
